Tại sao từ I trong tiếng Anh lại viết hoa

Hôm nay làm về và lang thang trên mạng, bắt gặp được chủ đề này cũng khá hay, e Tiến Anh @ etienanh.blogspot.com xin chia sẽ cùng các bạn tham khảo, có thể có những cái đơn giản nhưng ngược lại đó cũng có thể là những điều thú vị  thật đáng yêu.

Sau đây là nguyên văn đoạn trích dẫn, các bạn cùng theo dõi nhé:

“Nhờ ông giúp tôi giải thích: Tại sao subject pronoun "I" luôn dược viết hoa ở mọi vị trí trong câu. Xin cảm ơn ông rất nhiều.

Tôi cũng nói thêm, đây là câu hỏi mà học sinh của tôi hỏi (tôi là giáo viên cấp 2) và tôi cũng đã hỏi nhiều vị thầy của tôi nhưng tôi chưa nhận được câu trả lời nào cả. Mong nhận được sự giúp đỡ của ông. Tôi chân thành cảm ơn.”

Đúng là đại danh từ “I” hơi đặc biệt so với các đại danh từ khác. Chúng ta có thể viết they, we, he, she trong một câu văn theo dạng viết thường, nhưng đến I thì phải viết hoa. Chẳng hạn như chúng ta có thể viết“That is the problem that he and I are considering”, chứ không thể viết “That is the problem that he and i are considering”.

Theo từ điển nguyên từ học (tức etymology) thì đại danh từ I trong tiếng Anh có nguồn gốc từ đại danh từ ic (hay ich) từ tiếng Anh cổ (Old Engish).

Năm 1137, đại danh từ này được đơn giản hóa thành I cho đến ngày nay. Nhưng thời đó, người ta vẫn có thể viết i thường chứ không phải viết hoa. Đến khoảng năm 1250 thì đại danh từ I được xem là một từ đặc thù, và để tránh đọc nhầm trong các văn bản viết tay (ngày đó chưa có máy vi tính!) nên người ta viết hoa. Khoảng cuối thế kỉ 14, cách viết hoa I bắt đầu xuất hiện trong sách như cuốn Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, nhưng cũng có khi viết giống như là Y.

Tuy nhiên, cách viết hoa đại danh từ I chỉ phổ biến từ những năm sau 1700. Đại văn hào Shakespeare thì dùng ice (đọc là "ichay" , "eeker" hay "ikay") vào khoảng thế kỉ 16-17. Còn ở miền Trung nước Anh, người ta vẫn dùng utchy như là i. Ngày xưa, cũng chưa có dấu chấm trên chữ i thường; mãi đến thời có font chữ La Mã thì người ta cho thêm dấu chấm trên i như ngày nay.

Đó là vài dòng lịch sử. Nhưng tại sao I được viết hoa? Không ai biết tại sao, nhưng có vài lí giải (giả thuyết?) để trả lời cho câu hỏi này.

Giả thuyết đáng tin cậy nhất là vì 

(a) I chỉ có một mẫu tự duy nhất,

(b) nó nói về “tôi”, mà theo chủ nghĩa cá nhân, “tôi” là quan trọng, và

(c) để thể hiện tầm quan trọng đó trong văn bản, người ta viết hoa. Xin nhấn mạnh rằng đây chỉ giả thuyết, chứ cũng chưa có cách nào kiểm chứng giả thuyết này đúng hay sai .

Bởi vì sách giáo khoa cung cấp cho người học những từ vựng, cụm từ, câu,... không thực tế. Chúng ta sẽ không hoặc hiếm khi có cơ hội sử dụng chúng trong giao tiếp.

Đây là một ví dụ minh họa:

A: Hello. Nice to meet you. My name is Luan. What is your name?
B: My name is John.
A. Nice to meet you John.
...

Mọi người thấy quen không!? ^^

Tuy nhiên, trong giao tiếp, chúng ta sẽ bắt gặp những câu sau: What's up?, How's it goin'?, I've gotta go, I wanna be a billionaire, ... . Và muôn vàn thứ "lạ lùng" khác!

Choáng quá phải không? ^^ Đây là một trong những lý do tại sao kỹ năng nghe, nói tiếng Anh của chúng ta  không tiến bộ khi sử dụng sách giáo khoa.

Vì vậy, bước đầu tiên để cải thiện kỹ năng nghe và nói, chúng ta phải chọn đúng loại tài liệu.

Luân xin chia sẻ một số loại tài liệu thực tế, đây mới thực sự là những gì chúng ta nên học, nếu muốn nghe, nói thành thạo:

1. Phim ảnh
2. Âm nhạc
3. Tiểu thuyết
4. Nói chuyện với người bản xứ

Điều thú vị là phim ảnh, âm nhạc, tiểu thuyết không nhàm chán như sách giáo khoa, chúng ta cũng tự do lựa chọn bộ phim mình yêu thích, bài hát hợp "gu", tiểu thuyết mình "kết" nhất.

Bên cạnh đó, việc nói chuyện với người bản xứ rất quan trọng, điều này giúp chúng ta tự tin hơn trong giao tiếp. 

Nếu ở nơi bạn sinh sống không có điều kiện nói chuyện trực tiếp với người bản xứ, thì hiện nay, với internet, chúng ta có thể tham gia vào các cộng đồng, câu lạc bộ tiếng Anh trực tuyến để thực hành, thông qua phần mềm chat (ví dụ như Skype chẳng hạn). Rất đơn giản, tiện lợi mà hiệu quả rất cao!

Cách học 100 từ mới tiếng Anh mỗi ngày

Bước 1 : Đầu tiên bạn nên học theo chủ đề cho dễ học ( khuyến cáo nên mua quyển bài tập từ vựng tiếng anh của Xuân Bá , có hình ảnh và bài tập đi kèm , rất dễ nhớ ) . Nên học theo chủ đề bởi vì chúng sẽ giúp bạn liên tưởng tốt hơn và đồng thời cũng dễ nhớ hơn .

Bước 2 : Bạn chỉ nên học các từ đơn giản từ 1 đến 2 âm tiết vì các từ nhiều âm tiểt khác trở lên .Đa phần là từ ghép .

Vd: waterfall = water( nước ) + fall( ngã ) = thác nước football = foot( chân ) + ball ( bóng ) = đá bóng

Tuy nhiên , vẫn còn 1 số ngoại lệ

Vd : butterfly = butter ( bơ ) + fly ( bay hoặc con ruồi ) = con bướm screwdriver = screw ( ốc vít ) + driver ( người lái xe ) = tua vít

Trong trường hợp này , tốt nhất bạn nên sử dụng trí tưởng tượng ( tưởng tượng là yếu tố then chốt của trí nhớ ) càng cụ thể , nhiều hình ảnh sinh động và càng quái dị thì … càng tốt .

Vd : butterfly .

Bạn hãy hình dung , một con bướm đang bay liệng tung tăng thì một miếng bơ thơm ngon từ đâu bay đến trúng luôn vào com bướm làm nó được ướp nguyên 1 màu vàng và bạn tưởng đó là 1 miếng bơ lạ cho vào mồm nhai nhóp nhép . ( lạy chúa con đang đói )

Bước 3 : Học các tiếp đầu ngữ và tiếp vị ngữ, ngữ căn . Tiếp đầu ngữ là những từ được thêm đằng trước từ để làm rõ nghĩa thêm . Tiếp vị ngữ cũng tương tự nhưng là ở phía sau . ( để học cái này , bạn nên mua quyển dạy đọc nhanh của tony buzan , ở đó tổng hợp tất cả 3 cái trên , rất hữu ích ) .

Vd : mis ( sai ) + understand ( hiểu ) = misunderstand ( hiểu nhầm ) under ( dưới ) + ground ( mặt đất ) = underground ( dưới mặt đất )

garden ( làm vườn ) + er ( chỉ điều kiện or hoạt động ) = gardener ( người làm vườn ) work ( làm việc ) +er ( như trên ) = worker ( công nhân )

Sự kết hợp giữa bước 2 và 3 :

Vd : goal( khung thành ) + keep ( giữ ) + er ( chỉ đk or hoạt động ) = goal ( khung thành ) + keeper ( người giữ ) = thủ môn

Bước 4 : Chia tất cả các từ cùng 1 chủ đề thành từng nhóm nhỏ ( có điêm tương đồng ) để dễ học và không bỏ sót từ nào .

vd : basketball , football , footballer , goalkeeper , runner , baseball , .. Chia làm 2 nhóm : nhóm 1 các môn thể thao : basketball , baseball , football nhóm 2 vận động viên : runner , goalkeeper , footballer .

Bước 5 : Phải học thường xuyên và có tính kiên trì .

Hiện tại đây là 1 số cách cơ bản , dành cho cả dân chuyên và không chuyên tiếng anh . Có thể bạn chưa đạt được mức 100 từ / ngày ngay lập tức nhưng nếu cứ làm đều đều thì mình nghĩ giới hạn ko chỉ dừng lại ở 100 từ đâu .

Cách viết và đọc ngày tháng năm trong tiếng Anh

1/- Ngày trong tuần (Days of week)

Monday: thứ 2 Tuesday: thứ 3 Wednesday: thứ 4 Thursday: thứ 5
Friday: thứ 6 Saturday: thứ 7 Sunday: chủ nhật

Chúng ta dùng giới từ "On" trước ngày trong tuần
Ex: on Monday, on Tuesday...

2/- Ngày trong tháng (Dates)

3/- Tháng trong năm (months of a year)

January: tháng 1 April: tháng 4 July: tháng 7 October: tháng 10
February: tháng 2 May: tháng 5 August: tháng 8 November: tháng 11
March: tháng 3 June: tháng 6 September: tháng 9 December: tháng 12
Chúng ta dùng giới từ "In" trước các tháng. Nếu có cả ngày và tháng chúng ta dùng giới từ "On"

Ex: in January, in February... on December 3rd...

4/- Cách viết và đọc ngày tháng

a. Cách viết: Thứ, tháng + ngày (số thứ tự), năm (A.E)

Ex: Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008
Thứ, ngày (số thứ tự) + tháng, năm (B.E)
Ex: Wednesday, 3rd December, 2008

Đôi lúc chúng ta thấy người Anh, Mỹ viết ngày tháng như sau:

Wednesday, December 3, 2008 (A.E)
Wednesday, 3 December, 2008 (B.E)

b. Cách đọc: Thứ + tháng + ngày (số thứ tự) + năm
hoặc Thứ + ngày (số thứ tự) + of + tháng + năm.

Ex:
Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008: Wednesday, December the third, two thousand and eight. hoặc Wednesday, the third of December, two thousand and eight.

Trong tiếng Anh, cách đọc và viết ngày tháng rất đa dạng và được áp dụng theo 2 văn phong: Anh-Anh hoặc Anh-Mỹ. Dưới đây là các quy tắc chung nhất về cách đọc và viết. Hãy thực hành thật nhiều để không bị lúng túng mỗi khi viết hay đọc ngày, tháng, năm bằng tiếng Anh bạn nhé.

1. Cách đọc viết ngày tháng theo Anh-Anh.

- Ngày luôn viết trước tháng và bạn có thể thêm số thứ tự vào phía sau (ví dụ: st, th...), đồng thời bỏ đi giới từ of ở vị trí trước tháng (month). Dấu phẩy có thể được sử dụng trước năm (year), tuy nhiên cách dùng này không phổ biến.
Ví dụ:
o 6(th) (of) January(,) 2009 (Ngày mùng 6 tháng 1 năm 2009)
o 1(st) (of) June(,) 2007 (Ngày mùng 1 tháng 5 năm 2007)

- Khi đọc ngày tháng theo văn phong Anh – Anh, bạn sử dụng mạo từ xác định trước ngày

Ví dụ:
March 2, 2009 - March the second, two thousand and nine

2. Cách đọc và viết theo Anh-Mỹ

- Nếu như viết ngày tháng theo văn phong Anh-Mỹ, tháng luôn viết trước ngày và có mạo từ đằng trước nó.
Dấu phẩy thường được sử dụng trước năm

Ví dụ:

o August (the) 9(th), 2007 (Ngày mùng 9 tháng 8 năm 2007)

- Bạn cũng có thể viết ngày, tháng, năm bằng các con số và đây cũng là cách thông dụng nhất.

Ví dụ:

o 9/8/07 hoặc 9-8-07

Tuy nhiên nếu bạn sử dụng cách viết như trong ví dụ trên, sẽ rất dễ xảy ra nhầm lẫn bởi nếu hiểu theo văn phong Anh-Anh sẽ là ngày mồng 9 tháng 8 năm 2007 nhưng sẽ là mồng 8 tháng 9 năm 2007 theo văn phong Anh-Mỹ.

Như vậy bạn nên viết rõ ràng ngày tháng bằng chữ (October thay vì chỉ viết số 10) hoặc sử dụng cách viết tắt (Aug, Sept, Dec...) để tránh sự nhầm lẫn đáng tiếc xảy ra

- Khi đọc ngày tháng theo văn phong Anh – Mỹ, bạn có thể bỏ mạo từ xác định:

Ví dụ:

o March 2, 2009 - March second, two thousand and nine.

Lưu ý:

Nếu bạn đọc ngày trước tháng thì bạn phải sử dụng mạo từ xác định trước ngày và giới từ of trước tháng.

Ví dụ:
o 2 March 2009 - the second of March, two thousand and nine
o 4 September 2001 - the fourth of September, two thousand and one

* Khi nói, vào thứ mấy, phải dùng giới từ ON đằng trước thứ.

VD: On Sunday, I stay at home. (Vào ngày chủ nhật. tôi ở nhà).

NÓI NGÀY TRONG THÁNG

* Khi nói ngày trong tháng, chỉ cần dùng số thứ tự tương ứng với ngày muốn nói, nhưng phải thêm THE trước nó.

VD: September the second = ngày 2 tháng 9. Khi viết, có thể viết September 2nd

* Nếu muốn nói ngày âm lịch, chỉ cần thêm cụm từ ON THE LUNAR CALENDAR đằng sau.

VD: August 15th on the Lunar Calendar is the Middle-Autumn Festival. (15 tháng 8 âm lịch là ngày tết Trung Thu)

* Khi nói vào ngày nào trong tháng, phải dùng giới từ ON trước ngày.

VD: On the 4th of July, Americans celebrate their Independence Day. (Vào ngày 4 tháng 7, người Mỹ ăn mừng ngày Quốc Khánh của họ).

4 MÙA

SPRING = Mùa xuân

SUMMER = Mùa hè

AUTUMN = Mùa thu (Người Mỹ dùng chữ FALL thay cho AUTUMN -"fall" có nghĩa là "rơi", mà mùa thu thì lá rụng nhiều!?)

WINTER = Mùa đông

* Khi nói vào mùa nào, ta dùng giới từ IN.

VD: IT ALWAYS SNOWS IN WINTER HERE = Ở đây luôn có tuyết rơi vào mùa đông.
